Sync with a data server
A data server keeps your warehouse: every phone connected to it gets the same items, boxes, locations and photos. Each household runs its own, at home or on a server. See Run a data server to start one.
Connect a phone
- On the data server's Manage page, under Phones, add a phone. It shows a QR code.
- In the app: Settings › Sync with the web › Scan QR code, and scan it.
- Pull the item list down to sync.
The first sync with a server sends it everything on the phone. After that, each sync sends what changed on the phone and gets what changed elsewhere; when the same thing was edited in two places, the newer edit wins.
Instead of scanning, you can type the server's address and the token shown under the QR code.
Photos
Photos come small at first, so the list is quick; the full-size ones follow in the background. Settings › Sync with the web can keep the full-size ones for Wi-Fi only, or not sync photos at all.
http or https
At home the app talks to the data server over plain http://, but only at home-network
addresses: 192.168.…, 10.…, 172.16–31.…, Tailscale's 100.64–127.…, names ending in
.local, .lan or .home.arpa, and names without dots. Anywhere else the address must be
https://, so the token never travels in the clear over the internet.
When sync stops working
- The server rejected the token: the token was revoked on the Manage page. Add the phone again and scan the new code.
- Sync failed: the server is off, or the phone can't reach it (e.g. away from home with a server that is only on the home network). The app keeps everything and syncs next time.
